  County Updates

Here's the latest I received from Susan Peter's office last week re Sheriff:

Today I received some great news that the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department has been awarded $21 million in federal funding to rehire 50 deputies and wanted to share that information with you.

You may recall my last email explained how Sheriff John McGinness and I were hoping Sacramento County would be able to obtain grant funding as part of the second round of the Federal COPS Hiring Program awards. That program allocates funds to local law enforcement agencies to help hire officers to increase a department’s community oriented policing capacity and crime-prevention efforts. As part of that effort Sheriff McGinness and I worked closely with our area’s Congressional members Dan Lungren and Doris Matsui – and that cooperation has paid off. Sacramento County is getting the maximum award amount available through the program, and it is getting the largest award for any agency in the state of California . In fact Sacramento County ’s share of the grant comprises approximately 30 percent of the overall allocation for the state.

Adding fifty new officers will enable the Sheriff’s Department to increase the level of protection for the unincorporated area that many of us call home. I spoke with Sheriff McGinness this morning and he believes this funding will be able to help activate the previously disbanded POP (Problem Oriented Policing) Program and increase helicopter operations. As I learn more details from Sheriff McGinness, please be assured that I will pass that information along to you.

Again, I wanted to share this important information with you as well as take the liberty to commend the efforts of Sheriff McGinness, Congressman Lungren and Congresswoman Matsui who worked so hard on behalf of the residents of the unincorporated area to obtain this funding.
